Seaside Rendezvous
Posted on January 25th, 2012

I spent part of the day looking around Brighton seafront for interesting things to photograph. Volunteering at the museum has helped me to appreciate photography more, and I thought I’d take some photographs for photography’s sake for a change.

2000 BC – Stonehenge
Posted on January 10th, 2012

I am planning a project looking at the main events from the past 4000 years – key points in history and generally interesting things. Ideally I am looking to produce an illustration for every single year, although this would be a monumental undertaking! As well as that it’s actually quite hard finding solid dates and events for each year (a lot of stuff I have found has been quite boring – kings dying or taking the throne and wars pretty much). If anyone knows of any interesting events in mind from 2000 – 1000 BC let me know about it! This is my first attempt at an illo for 2000BC which is the date when Stonehenge was completed (allegedly). It feels a little rough around the edges and not quite on the money, so I may come back to it and develop it a bit more after I tackle a few more events.
Skull Drawings….again.
Posted on November 20th, 2011
I Can’t get enough of anatomical drawing, or skulls. So here are some more sketches I did recently. I know it’s all a bit lame – drawing skulls and that – but I can’t help myself! I did one sketch and then messed around with it in various ways.
I had a go at drawing the muscle structure over the skull – I definitely want to do more muscle drawings…
How about overlaying them all? Weird.

I’m working on a new typeface – inspired by the planet
Gliese 581 c
This is a quick comp just to give an idea of where I am at the moment – I want to improve my Photoshop planet creation skills. Obviously that is an important skill to have.

Horizon – Seeing Stars
Posted on August 19th, 2011
I watched
this episode of horizon the other day, and one of the scientists had made this awesome little model of a black hole and its accretion disk. Go science! Reminds me of my final major project…ah, the fun.

new digital collages
Posted on July 30th, 2011
A few ideas for a recent competition I entered. I want to do some more digital collage and use some of my own textures. These images are inspired by the phases of the moon, and some of the textures are taken from old astrology books.

Prints for sale in the Rag Factory
Posted on July 1st, 2011
I didn’t take my camera to the private view so I only have pictures taken with my terrible camera phone. If you are in the Brick Lane area between now and Sunday you should get yourself down to the Rag Factory and buy yourself a print or two!

I’m actually really chuffed with these images, which is rare for me. It might just be the fact that I am completely knackered after an exhausting few days of constant running, sawing, cutting and bleeding. They look very ‘galactic’ to me – like a collection of stars/planets, which is fitting.
Resin casts
Posted on June 4th, 2011
I made some resin casts of the brain and heart, I’ve been thinking of mounting them on a board and back lighting them with LEDs. Here are a couple of tests.

Black Hole Diagrams
Posted on May 11th, 2011
Developing ideas for cyanotypes/schematics around the whole black hole subject area.
Also, I have learned that objects apparently move faster than the speed of light within the inner horizon of a black hole. I’m thinking that if you could harness this extreme gravitational force time travel might be fairly feasible! If you were travelling faster than light…it just blows my mind. You would be seeing ‘old’ photons of light in front of you? Would you become invisible? If you are approaching someone at faster than lightspeed, surely you cannot be seen….
Collaboration with Ambrose Vevers
Posted on May 9th, 2011
Brose told me he had developed a ground breaking woodcarving technique, and would like some images to carve. The main stipulation was that I ‘think what a robot would do’. I sent him this impossible triangle, and he has carved it like the woodworking maestro he is. More to come soon I hope!
Microscopic Illustration
Posted on May 1st, 2011
I wanted to photograph some of the stuff I was looking at through the microscope (the supplied USB ocular has a pretty low resolution), so I fashioned a makeshift adaptor tube for my DSLR out of a toilet roll tube, a pringles lid and some electrical tape! Here are some of the tiny illustrations:
I want to make some microscopic illustrations, so I am testing some ideas, images and text. I printed everything as small as I could on the inkjet printer – the images are no more than 3-4mm across. I want to try printing on the laser printer to see how that compares.
These images are of blood cells and a cross section of a plant stem. I quite like the whacky radials I’m getting from the bogroll tube here! Looks like the intro to a Bond film.
The Big Update
Posted on April 23rd, 2011
I haven’t found the time to blog for a while, so here is an update of some progress I’ve made recently.
Latest loaf of bread was the best yet, it’s getting better. Got another dough on the go today as well…
I bought an oscilloscope and some kind of voltage meter/thing from the dump a little while back. I’m probably going to use them for the ‘time machine mk.2′ or perhaps the prediction machine. We’ll see. Maybe both.
I have been making some cyanotype prints over the last few days. I am thinking of using one of the sketchbooks I made as a cyanotype sketchbook – exposing each page as I go.

I bought an old Commodore VIC 20 at a bootsale the other day. I was quite surprised to see it still works! I’ve been trying to figure out how to program images/sound on it but it’s frying my brain slightly. Hopefully I can come up with some images to use with my project.

tracing paper animation
Posted on April 5th, 2011
I am really happy with this little animation, and I don’t quite know why. Maybe it is the sheer crappyness of it. I have been meaning to animate this image for a while and finally got round to it today. I am thinking of making some more stop frame animations using tracing paper overlays and lino cuts.

took some advice from hollybobs and returned to a bit of lino printing. Quite like the fact that the printed area looks a bit like a starfield, might print a plain block just for the texture and use it for something…I suddenly also have an urge to do loads of stuff on squared paper. More to come soon.

How a Black Hole Works
Posted on March 13th, 2011
here is my illustration of a black hole. This unlucky person has happened to have passed the event horizon (point of no return, as shown by the heavy black line on the right) and would have to be travelling at faster than the speed of light just to remain stationary at this time. They are uttering the word ‘help’, but because they are in the vacuum of space this desperate cry would not be audible.

world book day madness
Posted on February 16th, 2011
I felt over enthusiastic today and so decided start working on a poster for the planned fun at WSA for World Book Day. I was inspired by carnival posters, faires and playing cards. I want to start making things sooner rather than later, because time is rapidly running away from me. This design will no doubt change quite a bit, hopefully we will make more than one for the event, but I would definitely like to have them screen printed.

Cardboard Objects

Over the last few days I have been working to finish all my projects, and now I have just completed the 21 sided dice I wanted to make for the manifesto project.
The die, before cutting it out:
Here it is finished, but I still want to add a layer of varnish or something to protect it a bit before it gets rolled around. I’m quite eager to give it a go!
The depth of field here is a tad ridiculous but they were really quick snaps, just wanted something to shove on the old blog. Will hopefully photograph them tomorrow using the copy stand…

Wheel of Fortune-type thing
Posted on January 14th, 2011
An update on the progress of my wheel of fortune for the manifesto brief. I did the second screen print layer the other day, sadly the white I intended to use was far to translucent and so I used brown instead. Needs to be neatened up a bit but it’s more or less there now.

I felt inspired today to make an attempt at playing with the jackarse idea. I was thinking 80′s films, ford orion badges, lens flare and cheese. I’m kinda thinking this could be a TV series or something…of course in no way related to jackass. Inspired by

My feelings on today
Posted on October 12th, 2010
I made this poster design today, after having a tutorial this morning that was slightly depressing. I am not very good at putting my point across, and sometimes I don’t take criticism very well, especially if it is something I feel quite uncertain of myself. This project makes me feel like a bit of a douche bag, I don’t like writing about myself and most of the points I have made make me sound like a dick. Ah well! As I see it there are two choices: Keep working at it, or get pissed! Hmmm….
